New York, N.Y. 2016. 291 pages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medicare is a mixed blessing.\u00a0 On the one hand, it provides guaranteed coverage for Americans over age 65 or who are disabled, and the program has improved the health of millions since it was created in 1965.\u00a0 On the other hand, over the years Medicare has become incredibly complicated, thanks in part to efforts to privatize it, and running afoul of its sometimes arcane rules can be quite expensive.\u00a0 The program has many moving parts \u2013 Part A, Part B, Medicare Advantage plans (Part C), prescription drug coverage (Part D), and Medigap coverage \u2013 each with its own enrollment restrictions and costs.\u00a0 In short, Medicare is now so complex that expert guidance is almost essential.\u00a0 That\u2019s where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Get-Whats-Yours-for-Medicare\/Philip-Moeller\/The-Get-Whats-Yours-Series\/9781501124006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Get What\u2019s Yours for Medicare<\/em> <\/a>comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Moeller, a writer and the co-author of a companion volume on Social Security, presents an engagingly written instruction manual for Medicare, one that alerts those approaching the magic age of 65 of all the major pitfalls awaiting the unwary.\u00a0 As Moeller says, \u201cWhat we don\u2019t know about Medicare can cost us dearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book begins with the heartbreaking story of \u201cGlen,\u201d who retired in 2010 at age 70.\u00a0 He assumed that he had become a Medicare beneficiary automatically when he turned 65, and that his wife would be covered as well.\u00a0 For the next four years, he and his wife were healthy enough not to file any claims.\u00a0 Then, in 2014, his wife was diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0 That was when they discovered that they had no Medicare coverage, and because they had missed an enrollment period, they had to wait until the next year for coverage to begin.\u00a0 In the meantime, they paid for all the wife\u2019s enormous medical bills out of pocket.\u00a0 Glen\u2019s wife died before either of them could get on Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>Glen is hardly alone; Moeller cites many instances of people who made costly mistakes because they didn\u2019t know the rules, even people who consider themselves well-informed.\u00a0 He says that Medicare consumer counselors often hear the refrain, \u201cno one told me.\u201d Moeller tells you in this book, so after reading it you should have no excuses.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to explaining the basics \u2013 like what Medicare covers and what it doesn\u2019t \u2013 Moeller explains how Medicare\u2019s different parts interact with one another and with employer coverage. \u00a0If you are still working, you may be able to delay enrolling in Part B and Part D, but it depends on the circumstances.\u00a0 In addition, you will learn your rights to appeal Medicare coverage decisions (it turns out Medicare makes lots of mistakes); the pros and cons of Medicare Advantage plans and how to assess them; and how to avoid Medigap insurers denying you coverage on the basis of preexisting conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare is so complicated that Moeller, who himself is a Medicare beneficiary, learned things he didn\u2019t know in the course of writing this book, and he concedes that he still doesn\u2019t know everything.\u00a0 But what he has learned and has so readably related here could save you a lot of heartache and money.<\/p>\n<p>For more about the book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Get-Whats-Yours-for-Medicare\/Philip-Moeller\/The-Get-Whats-Yours-Series\/9781501124006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/weatherby-associates.com\/new-book-offers-guidance-through-the-medicare-maze<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philip Moeller.
