Children may live too far away or lack the resources to offer a parent meaningful help.<\/p>\n<p>But there is no reason why circumstances like these should bar anyone from a quality old age.\u00a0 It just takes planning, which is where this empowering book comes in. Full of helpful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elderindustry.com\/46923.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">checklists and worksheets<\/a>, <em>Who Will Take Care of Me When I\u2019m Old?<\/em> is an essential guide to preparing for and navigating the inevitable losses that aging entails \u2013 the loss of functioning, the loss of loved ones and friends, and the loss of income.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elderindustry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joy Loverde<\/a>, a consultant and speaker on aging issues and the author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780307409621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Complete Eldercare Planner<\/a><\/em>, has written a self-help book that offers both emotional and practical advice.\u00a0 The first\u00a0chapters address overcoming the psychological barriers\u00a0to planning.\u00a0 After all, the prospect of growing old and needing care is something most people would prefer not to think about, much less plan for.\u00a0 One early section suggests ways to avoid self-sabotaging thoughts.\u00a0 Other section headings include \u201cLessen the Grip of Guilt\u201d and \u201cMotivate Yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book then turns to the planning work at hand.\u00a0 An early chapter deals with how to stay afloat financially.\u00a0 Near the top of the list are getting one\u2019s legal affairs in order, including consulting with an elder law attorney.\u00a0 Loverde suggests ways to create an income stream in retirement and lists scores of job possibilities.\u00a0 She even has recommendations for lowering grocery bills.<\/p>\n<p>Succeeding chapters present ideas and resources for successfully aging in place alone, exploring housing options both in the U.S. and abroad, coping with widowhood, \u201cforaging for a family,\u201d staying connected with those you know and making new friends, and evaluating medical providers.\u00a0 One chapter is devoted to considerations in adopting a pet.<\/p>\n<p>The final chapters deal with strategies for coping when old age becomes seriously challenging.\u00a0 Loverde covers \u201cthe game changer\u201d of chronic illness, including how to effectively advocate for yourself or find a professional to advocate for you.\u00a0 \u00a0A chapter titled \u201c\u2018Just Shoot Me\u2019 Is Not a Plan\u201d maps strategies for ensuring quality care at the end of life.\u00a0 There is even a list of resources for those considering \u201csuicide tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the book, Loverde provides names of helpful organizations, and one fun feature is that each chapter ends with one recommended book, YouTube video, movie, song and TED Talk on that chapter\u2019s topic.\u00a0 Near the end Loverde includes\u00a0a multi-page goldmine of useful websites (ElderLawAnswers among them).<\/p>\n<p>This is not the kind of book anyone looks forward to reading, but it is a book that is essential reading for anyone who wants to start laying the groundwork now for the best possible old age.<\/p>\n<p>To read more about <em>Who Will Take Care of Me When I\u2019m Old?<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elderindustry.com\/11201.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/weatherby-associates.com\/book-review-who-will-take-care-of-me-when-im-old<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joy Loverde.
